Morphological phenotypes are fixed in distinct dog breeds creating breed stereotypes amenable for association mapping studies. Examples include (clockwise from top left): size—Scottish deerhound vs. Chihuahua; upright curved tails—black and tan coonhound with Airedale terrier; position of ears—golden retriever vs. French bulldog; short/long hair—German shorthaired pointer and bearded collie; shape (speed/power)—saluki vs. Neapolitan mastiff; length of snout—whippet vs. Japanese chin.
